5 Common Skin Myths Clarified, with JB Skin Guru

As we welcome a fresh New Year with open arms – good riddance 2020! – we thought it was the perfect time to get clear on some of the most common skin care misconceptions, to put our freshest faces forward for 2021.

When it comes to skincare myths and truths, there is no one we trust more to guide us than Jennifer Brodeur, i.e., JB Skin Guru, the trusted skin advisor for Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama. She is also the founder and creator of our beloved MAX+ LED Light Therapy, a dedicated mentor to our PS Glow Room, and entrepreneur extraordinaire!

In our latest episode of IGTV, PS Business Director Vanessa Grutman, connected with JB to debunk 5 common skin myths, and discuss how to build great skin from within:

Myth #1 – My skin will be hydrated if I drink enough water.

Although JB is a strong believer that proper water consumption (more than 8 glasses per day) will improve skin outcomes, drinking water alone is not enough to ensure skin hydration. Our skin needs to be moisturized topically with proper products to achieve optimal hydration.

Myth #2 – I don’t need to wash my face at night if I don’t wear makeup.

Throughout the day, our skin is exposed environmental aggressors, including dirt and air pollution. Cleansing your skin at night will remove dirt, prevent irritation and minimize clogged pores.

Myth # 3 – What I eat does not impact my skin.

Our skin is last on the list to receive nourishment from the foods we eat. Eating a varied diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, is the best way to ensure your skin will reap the benefits. Zinc deficiency, for example, can lead to acne in some individuals, whereas excessive sugar intake can disrupt hormones, and lead to a variety of skin issues.

Myth # 4 – It isn’t stress causing my skin issues!

JB found that many of the women she’s worked with over the years were too busy to even realize that they were stressed. Sound familiar? Whether it be something learned through the COVID-19 Pandemic or otherwise, the value in slowing down reaches beyond our physical and mental health – your skin will thank you too! Chronic stress can lead to dull, dry or inflamed skin, and proper self-care is foundational in building a glow from the inside out.

Myth # 5 – Coconut oil is a suitable moisturizer for my face and body.

Although we love this multitasking superfood, Coconut oil was not designed to be used as a moisturizer. In fact, in certain individuals, it can lead to skin irritation, breakouts and more. We recommend you keep that Coconut oil in the kitchen, and seek out topical products that have been thoughtfully designed for your skin needs.
