April is Rosacea Awareness Month, which means it’s the perfect time for us to talk about this common condition, and the best ways to keep symptoms at bay.
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects the face, characterized by chronic redness and dilated blood vessels on the cheeks, chin and nose. Sometimes, pimple-like lesions and swelling are also present, which is why it’s so often misdiagnosed as adult acne. Rosacea can affect all ages and stages of skin, and if left untreated can worsen severely over time. Triggers are different for every person affected, but commonly include sun exposure, anxiety and stress, temperature extremes (including steam baths, saunas, hot yoga, and hot drinks), and certain food and drink (red wine and spicy foods are common culprits). Cosmetics and skincare containing high levels of alcohol, acetone, or fragrance can also cause the condition to flare up.
The key to keeping these symptoms at bay? Management, with the help of some key redness-relieving products and therapeutic treatments offered at Project Skin MD.
Rosacea and Vitamin C.
For skin affected by rosacea, Vitamin C serum is instrumental in helping control the inflammation caused by the disorder. It also helps defend against free radical damage to an already compromised skin barrier. Find a topical Vitamin C serum composed of pure L ascorbic acid, and apply it daily without exception. Some of our favourites include SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, Phloretin CF, or Serum 10; one of our skincare advisors will be happy to help you determine which is right for your skin.

Wearing sunscreen daily (yes, even on cloudy, rainy or – dare we say – snowy days) is important for everyone, but especially for those with rosacea, since sun exposure is a big trigger. Make sure you choose a non-chemical, broad spectrum (protects from both UVA and UVB rays) formula that contains zinc or titanium dioxide, and has an SPF of 30 or higher. We love SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50 and Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-on Sunscreen SPF 50.
Colorescience® All Calm™ Clinical Redness Corrector SPF 50.
This 3-in-1 product from Colorescience works to instantly neutralize the appearance of redness and soothe sensitive skin. SPF 50 protects from UVA and UVB rays, while its patent pending BioSolace™ complex provides ongoing relief from sensitivity and the appearance of redness. Use this product every day as the first step in your makeup routine.
MAX+ LED Light Therapy.
MAX+ LED Light Therapy can be customized based on your skin needs, and is recommended to benefit many skin conditions, including rosacea. Each wavelength of light delivered by MAX+ corresponds with a specific therapeutic action within skin cells. For rosacea, we use the green “redness-relieving” wavelength, which helps calm flushing, clears unhealthy capillaries, and helps strengthen deeper, healthy vascular networks for enhanced circulation. The Near Infra-Red (NIF) wavelength, which can be paired with all colours, also helps us address moderate to severe rosacea.
Laser and intense pulsed light treatments.
Project Skin MD offers several laser and broadband light treatment options to target rosacea. Determining the treatment that’s right for you and your skin is essential to keeping progressive symptoms of rosacea at bay over the long term. Laser treatments like Laser Genesis, Excel V™ and VBeam Perfecta® work to selectively target and clear facial redness, and reduce inflammation from within by shutting down the flushing, blushing vessels. IPL Photorejuvenation treats the skin with flashes of broadband light to target and correct the irregular colour variations in the skin.
There may not be a cure for rosacea but, if you’re affected by this all too common condition, knowing your treatment and maintenance options can make all the difference.
