    Frequently Asked Questions

How to prepare for your appointment

At Project Skin MD® Ottawa, we recommend that for the week before your Botox treatment, you should:

    • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen.
    • Avoid drinking wine or alcoholic beverages.

For 24 to 48 hours before your appointment, you should:

    • Avoid caffeine, including coffee, caffeinated sodas, and energy drinks.
    • Avoid waxing, bleaching, or tweezing around the treatment area.
    • Avoid using depilatory creams around the treatment area.
    • Avoid using certain topical products, such as retinol, as these can break your skin.

These recommendations are to reduce your risk of swelling, bruising, or discomfort after your treatment.

What to expect after your treatment?

Botox treatments have very little associated downtime. Apart from a few exceptions, you can return to the majority of your regular daily activities immediately after your appointment at our Ottawa clinic.

While we review consent forms and answer any questions you have, we will also advise you regarding what to do after your Botox treatment. Primarily, you should avoid rubbing or pressing on the treatment area for 12 hours after your treatment. Potential side effects that you might experience include:

    • Redness or bruising around the treatment site.
    • Swelling, or inflammation.

    Does Botox hurt?

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during or after their Botox treatment. However, the very fine needles used during treatment may result in a mild pinching sensation. Our Ottawa clinic is happy to apply numbing cream prior to your procedure to ensure your comfort.

While you may have minor bruising or swelling after your treatment, these are normal side effects that will subside in a few days.

Is Botox covered by OHIP in Ontario?

Botox is not generally covered by OHIP in Ontario, but you should discuss your reasons for wanting it with your doctor to see if there are exceptions for your needs.

    Can you drink after Botox?

After your Botox treatment, you should wait between 24 and 48 hours to drink any alcoholic beverages. As alcohol is a blood thinner, it can increase the risk of swelling and bruising after your treatment. You should also avoid alcohol for a week prior to your treatment.

    Can you exercise after Botox?

After your Botox treatment, you should wait to exercise for at least 24 hours. Exercise raises your blood pressure, which can increase your risk of inflammation and general discomfort after your treatment.

    Can you fly after Botox?

You should wait at least 24 to 48 hours before flying after you receive Botox treatment. The pressure changes that you experience when on an airplane can make your Botox migrate to other parts of the body; the longer you wait, the better while the injections settle.

Can you lay down after Botox?

You should wait between 3 to 4 hours before lying down after you receive Botox treatment. If you lay down too soon after treatment, the injection may spread or migrate and cause unwanted side effects outside of the treatment area.

Can you wear makeup after Botox?

It’s best to avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours after your Botox treatment, as foreign substances and ingredients in makeup can increase the risk of infection, redness, swelling, and overall discomfort. However, you can cleanse and wash your face during this time period.
