With laser tattoo removal, what was once permanent can be a memory! Project Skin MD® Ottawa offers medical-grade lasers for tattoo removal, which enables our physicians and technicians to target specific colours with heightened efficacy and safety. Colour by colour, a specific wavelength, is employed to target the embedded ink. Instantly, pigment particles are dispersed. Over the following weeks, the body naturally and safely clears the debris, reducing tattoo ink. Tattoos begin to fade and clear after a few appointments, with most tattoos eventually disappearing completely.
Topical and local anesthetics may be applied before treatment for your comfort. For optimal safety and efficacy, laser tattoo removal at our Ottawa clinic is performed with medical-grade laser equipment and under the direction of a qualified physician.
Medical-grade laser tattoo removal is not BBL or IPL tattoo removal. Medical-grade lasers emit unique wavelengths of energy with proven safety and efficacy for tattoo removal, as each wavelength targets a specific colour of tattoo ink. Over several treatments, your tattoo will fade, and most tattoos will eventually clear completely.
During a personalized assessment your treatment provider will work with you to create a treatment plan to meet your unique skin needs.
We will then take baseline photos for your patient file. These will be used to show you your results and serve as a reference over time.
We will review our consent forms with you, making sure to answer any questions before proceeding with treatment.
After numbing the area, your treatment provider will then begin your treatment, targeting the tattoo pigment with medical-grade laser technology.

The treatment itself ranges from 5 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. At Project Skin MD® Ottawa, we offer topical numbing cream 60 minutes prior to treatment and inject a local anesthetic to increase your comfort during treatment. If time is an issue for you, we can skip the topical cream and only use local anesthetic; please let us know when booking.
The local anesthetic injection feels similar to a bee sting, and patients experience a stinging sensation briefly as the anesthetic takes effect. After the area is sufficiently numb, you may notice a slight heat or snapping sensation during treatment. Following your treatment, as the anesthetic wears off, you may feel tenderness and heat in the treated area. Cold compresses can help reduce any discomfort.
Direct sun exposure and use of self-tanners are important to avoid 2-4 weeks prior to treatment.
Yes. However, it is not recommended to exercise on the same day as your treatment. Saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga and sun exposure are not recommended in the following 7 days.
Laser tattoo removal may cause a darkening or loss of pigmentation in the treated area. This should self-correct with time, but it can be permanent. Blistering, scarring, pain, and infection are all possibilities with any laser treatment.
After approximately 2 weeks, the treatment area should have healed, making it possible to see the treatment’s effect on the tattoo ink. Results are permanent; however, it may take several treatments to remove the tattoo, and in some cases, the ink may not be entirely clear.
