    Frequently Asked Questions

How to prepare for your appointment

At Project Skin MD® Vancouver, there are several things you can do to prepare for your Botox treatment. Here are some key guidelines you can follow:

The week before your Botox treatment:

    • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen.
    • Avoid drinking wine or alcoholic beverages.

For 24 to 48 hours before your appointment:

    • Avoid caffeine, including coffee, caffeinated sodas, and energy drinks.
    • Avoid waxing, bleaching, or tweezing around the treatment area.
    • Avoid using depilatory creams around the treatment area.
    • Avoid using certain topical products, such as retinol

These recommendations reduce your risk of swelling, bruising, or discomfort after your treatment. In general, patients can return to their routine immediately following their Botox procedure.

What to expect after your treatment?

Apart from a few exceptions, you can return to the majority of your regular daily activities immediately after your Botox treatment, as there is very little associated downtime.

However, there are some precautions you can take to reduce potential side effects, such as avoiding rubbing or pressing on the treatment area for 12 hours after your treatment. You also might experience:

    • Redness or bruising around the treatment site.
    • Swelling, or inflammation.

    Does Botox hurt?

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during their Botox treatment at our Vancouver clinic, due to the fine needles used. If you have concerns regarding pain, we can numb your skin before your treatment to reduce small pinching sensations.

While you may have minor bruising or swelling after your treatment, those are expected to go away within a few days, and you can return to your daily activities following your appointment.

    Can you drink after Botox?

After your Botox treatment, we highly recommend that you wait between 24 and 48 hours to drink any alcoholic beverages. As alcohol is a blood thinner, it can increase the risk of swelling and bruising after your treatment. Prior to your treatment, it’s best to abstain from drinking alcohol as well.

    Can you exercise after Botox?

After your Botox treatment, you should wait to exercise or participate in strenuous activity for at least 24 hours. Activities that raise your blood pressure can increase your risk of inflammation and general discomfort after your treatment.

    Can you fly after Botox?

You should wait at least 24 to 48 hours before flying after you receive Botox treatment. The pressure changes that you experience when on an airplane can make your Botox migrate to other parts of the body, so waiting before you do will give it time to settle. The longer you can wait, the better.

Can you lay down after Botox?

You should wait between4 hours before lying down after you receive Botox treatment. If you lay down too soon after treatment, the injection may spread or migrate and cause unwanted side effects outside of the treatment area.

Can you wear makeup after Botox?

Avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours after your Botox treatment, as foreign substances can increase the risk of infection, redness, swelling, and overall discomfort. You can, however, cleanse and wash your face during this period.
