PicoWay® is a revolutionary, advanced laser solution for treating acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines, pigmentation and even hard-to-treat melasma. This revolutionary technology by Syneron Candela boasts three wavelengths and uses ultra-short picosecond (trillionths of a second) pulses to treat a broader range of skin types in fewer treatments and with greater comfort. At Project Skin MD® Vancouver, we can also use PicoWay® to treat tattoos in all colours. What can’t this baby do!?

PicoWay® delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses of energy targeted at unwanted pigment, while leaving surrounding skin untouched. These pulses break up the pigment into smaller particles that are more easily eliminated by the body’s natural processes. Because it emits less heat than traditional lasers, PicoWay® provides a more comfortable treatment with fast results and virtually no downtime.
After treatment, patients may experience temporary discolouration or reddening of the skin surrounding the treatment site. Over a few days, the targeted lesions will darken and slough away. Adopting a pigment-regulating daily skincare routine that includes broad-spectrum sunscreen will be highly recommended to prevent subsequent spots.
PicoWay® can be used to treat the skin on the face, neck, chest, and other areas on the body including arms and legs.
During a personalized assessment your treatment provider will work with you to create a treatment plan to meet your unique skin needs.
We will then take baseline photos for your patient file. These will be used to show you your results and serve as a reference over time.
We will review our consent forms with you, making sure to answer any questions before proceeding with treatment.
Your treatment provider will select the PicoWay® handpieces and laser wavelengths for use based on your unique treatment plan. During treatment, the ultra-short laser pulses surpass the outer layer of the skin to break up pigment beneath the surface or stimulate collagen and elastin in the dermis.

We do not offer PicoWay® to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
PicoWay® offers a safer laser alternative for darker skin types and for use in patients with melasma, who are more likely to experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Your virtual skincare experts – honouring social distancing while helping you maintain healthy skin.
PicoWay® at our Vancouver clinic uses the shortest laser pulses available, entering and exiting the skin in a picosecond – i.e. one trillionth of a second – which leads to a “photoacoustic” rather than a “photothermal” effect. The speed of delivery avoids heating the skin, which limits side effects, minimizes discomfort and results in little to no downtime after treatment.
The ultra-short laser pulses surpass the outer layer of the skin to break up pigment beneath the surface or stimulate collagen and elastin in the dermis, depending on the treatment plan. PicoWay® uses different handpieces and laser wavelengths to address sun damage, freckles, acne scars, wrinkles, and skin texture. The Zoom handpiece is designed to target dark spots and pigment (it is also used for tattoo removal). The Resolve handpiece treats acne scars, wrinkles, and boosts collagen production.
Since minimal heat is delivered to the skin during treatment, PicoWay® offers a safer laser alternative for darker skin types. It is a favourite amongst our Asian patients, who naturally have a higher Fitzpatrick skin classification. It can also be used to treat patients with melasma, who are more likely to experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Discomfort is minimal, and most individuals do not require numbing prior to treatment. You may experience minor redness for 1-2 days after treatment or the initial darkening of pigmented lesions that subsequently flake off. Many patients do not require any downtime after treatment.
Yes. However, it is not recommended to exercise on the same day as your treatment. Saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga and sun exposure are not recommended in the following 7 days.
