Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) treats acne and pre-cancerous sun damage, or actinic keratoses. It involves the application of Levulan®, a photosensitizing agent, and its activation under a medical-grade therapeutic blue light source (BLU-U®). Levulan® is absorbed by the targeted cells and converted into a chemical that heightens their sensitivity to light; under the BLU-U® illumination, the targeted cells are destroyed.
BLU-U® blue light therapy will also address mild to moderate acne.

How it works

What we do

Levulan® is applied to the skin and left to sit for a recommended period of time. After cleansing, the skin is exposed to BLU-U® blue light therapy. Immediately following treatment, sunlight must be strictly avoided for 48 hours. Peeling and dryness are expected for 3 to 5 days following treatment, and sunscreen is critical to ongoing protection and prevention.
BLU-U® helps kill acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes), effectively controlling acne in 1 to 2 treatment session per week over 5 weeks. BLU-U® acne treatments are safe and comfortable.
