Dr. Monica K. Li tells us what to expect from this revolutionary laser.
Have you met the real Super Pico? Your new favourite treatment for almost airbrush-perfect skin, this minimal-downtime laser brightens while removing pigmentation and marks, and can leave you with a smooth, beautiful canvas.
At Project Skin MD, we believe it’s important that our team gets to know each of the treatments we offer, so we test every single one ourselves. Lucky for you, Dr. Monica K. Li, Dermatologist, has agreed to share her PicoWay® treatment experience with us today.
I was so excited to hear we were adding PicoWay, or ‘Super Pico’, to Project Skin MD’s lineup of treatments. This advanced laser solution is safe and effective for all skin types, and can be used for the treatment of acne scars, pigmented lesions, wrinkles, fine lines, melasma, and even tattoos, but this superstar really shines when it gets to work brightening skin tone and improving skin texture. It works fast—using ultrashort picosecond (trillionths of a second) pulses—making the downtime shorter, and the treatment more comfortable than more abrasive lasers.
The goal of my Super Pico treatment series was to rejuvenate and tone my skin. I underwent a series of 3 treatments, spaced about 6 weeks apart. The treatment itself isn’t painful, but topical numbing can be applied 30 minutes prior to treatment if comfort is a top priority. I chose to forego this option, and instead to use cool air for comfort during the treatment; I was able to control the air myself, directing it where the laser pulses touched my skin throughout the treatment.
My treatment took less than 30 minutes, after which SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel and Physical Fusion tinted SPF 50 were applied to protect my skin from the sun. Following my treatment, I had many red blotches and little red dots (called petechiae) all over my face for about 7 days, but I was able to cover most of this up with tinted sunscreen, and I anticipated these findings on my face as I wanted a more assertive treatment for rejuvenation and toning.
As with all laser treatments, being very careful with sun exposure is important for 1 month afterwards, and this is no different with the ‘Super Pico’ treatment (especially for Asian skin types like mine) to protect against the risk for post-procedure post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
For a better idea of what this revolutionary treatment can do, take a look at these results:
As with most lasers, the PicoWay is typically a series of 3-4 treatments, but varies depending on what we are trying to achieve with using the laser. I personally saw results after 3 treatments – my skin has more glow, some sun-induced brown spots (yes, even dermatologists are not immune!) were removed and my pores appear smaller. As with any of the treatments we offer, ‘Super Pico’ can be adjusted according to patient skin type, concerns, needs and treatment goals.
