Debunking dermaplaning myths with Gwen

Have you met Gwen? She’s a senior Medical Aesthetician and all-around ray of sunshine at our Vancouver location. With six years of experience performing dermaplaning, and hundreds of treatments under her belt, she is passionate about ensuring that patients have an incredible experience with this treatment. Read on for her thoughts on some of the dermaplaning myths out there – and why it’s so important to see a professional for this treatment.

As we head into the cooler months and start to focus on repairing our skin from the damage we caused in the summer, exfoliation is the place to start!

Dermaplaning is a great non-invasive treatment that requires the use of a sterile surgical blade to lightly remove dead skin as well as vellus hair, better known as peach fuzz. As this treatment is gaining in popularity and more and more people are turning to “at home” options, there is a bit of misinformation circulating the Internet about dermaplaning – so we thought it would be helpful for us to offer our expertise and debunk some of the most common myths.

Myth #1: We can dermaplane at home with a store bought blade.

There are many tools out there available for purchase that will help “shave” your facial hair, but will not achieve the same effect as having an experienced professional use a sterile surgical scalpel to perform the treatment. When the proper blade is used at a 45 degree angle, first and foremost it is removing the superficial layer of the skin. You also gain a deeper hair removal as an added benefit. When you’re using an at-home tool, you are only getting the hair removal aspect.

Myth #2: Your hair will grow out thicker and darker.

Nope, not true!! No matter where it is you shave on your body, it is biologically impossible for hair to grow back thicker after shaving. When you shave, the blade cuts away the hair from the surface of the skin, but it does not remove the hair entirely. The hair is cut at a blunt state, so when the hair grows back it appears thicker. If you let the hair grow back to its full length, it will feel exactly the same as it did before the treatment. When dermaplaning, we are removing the vellus hair (peach fuzz) which has little impact on how the hair feels growing out.

Myth #3: Dermaplaning causes breakouts.

Dermaplaning will actually help with cell turnover, creating a smoother, brighter complexion. Any time you exfoliate, you are removing dead skin cells, oil and debris to assist with the product penetration of active ingredients in your serum and creams. Although this treatment is safe for most skin types, we will generally choose a different peel option for a more oily or acneic skin type.  With that being said, if you have active acne this is not the treatment for you.

Now that you’ve got the facts about dermaplaning, wouldn’t you feel more comfortable going to someone who understands how to use the tool properly? Always keep in mind that it’s important to see a professional who is properly trained and can help you make your skin goals a reality!
