If you struggle with acne, you are not alone.

In fact, you are far from it – acne is the #1 skin concern seen in medical aesthetics and the most common reason patients come to see us at Project Skin MD.

With that in mind, our PS Richmond Medical Aesthetician, Alex Lai, has developed a 3-step strategy to help patients combat acne. While many individuals who struggle with acne are afflicted for long periods of time, Alex’s plan to dramatically improve acne in as little as 2-4 weeks is one of the many reasons he has gained a reputation as our PS Acne Expert.

In our latest episode of IGTV, Business Director Vanessa Grutman connected with Alex on his top 3 ways to combat acne. This begins by choosing a knowledgeable treatment provider to tailor a treatment program to your unique needs and recommend the best home care products. Time to say buh-bye to blemishes for good!

bela md for acne

bela md offers a unique skin solution that combines medical-grade dermabrasion, advanced serum infusion and hydrogen water infusion. Better yet, it can be tailored to your unique skin concerns at each step.

For acne patients, Alex uses the diamond-tip microdermabrasion on dry skin, to remove the dead skin cells that may be clogging pores. There are 3 different grit options for buffing, which allow Alex to ease patients into exfoliation depending on their sensitivity level.

Once the skin has been exfoliated, Alex infuses the skin with a medical-grade serum. bCLEAR is his go-to for acne patients. This serum reduces excess oil production and clears congestion with a salicylic acid formula that is gentle enough to calm and soothe inflamed skin.

Finally, Alex uses hydrogen water after blemish extractions and loves to see how it reduces inflammation and calms the skin in real time!

MAX+ LED for acne

Alex loves using MAX+ LED treatments to rebalance and care for compromised, acne prone skin. Depending on the severity of the acne, Alex sometimes uses MAX+ treatments to reduce inflammation before introducing other treatments for acne. It is also one of his favourite add-ons to bring his bela md treatments to the next level!

MAX+ was designed by Jennifer Brodeur of JB Skin Guru, skin advisor to Oprah and Michelle Obama, with a variety of light-based treatment protocols that move through multiple LED colours to treat your skin’s specific needs. Alex loves the acne protocol, which combines wavelengths that kill acne-causing (p. acnes) bacteria, promote skin healing, reduce swelling and inflammation, and detoxify the skin.

SkinCeuticals for acne

Alex is a firm believer that more than half the battle with acne is using the right home care products. He recommends his patients incorporate the following products into their skincare routine:

Blemish + Age Defense: Alex recommends his acne patients use this serum in the evening as a spot treatment (for those with very sensitive skin) or over the whole face to improve the appearance of blotchiness, blemishes, and uneven skin tone.

Project Skin MD SkinCeuticals Acne

Phyto Corrective Gel: This hydrating gel serum with botanical ingredients is ideal to calm the skin, improve redness and reduce inflammation. It can be used as a moisturizer for acne patients who cannot tolerate other formulas.

Retinol 0.3: Retinol (Vitamin A) is a proven gold standard to treat acne. Patients can work up to alternating Retinol every other evening with Blemish + Age Defense.

Silymarin CF: Alex is so excited that SkinCeuticals now offers a Vitamin C serum designed specifically with acne patients in mind – this formula helps prevent blemishes and reduce oil production. It is the perfect daytime antioxidant for oily, acne-prone skin! Coming soon to PScontact us to hold yours!

#PSTip: Always, but particularly when incorporating photosensitizing products like Retinol into your skincare routine, we recommend using a mineral sunscreen like Physical Matte SPF 50. Since all SkinCeuticals sun protection products use only 100% mineral based filters, they offer UV protection without the greasy feeling our acne patients fear!
