Staying sun safe with mineral sunscreens

How can I choose the right sunscreen to protect, beautify, and shield my skin year round?

For many of us, the smell of sunscreen brings back beautiful memories. Building sandcastles, the fresh air of the ocean, or the beauty of a summer romance. We know it as our protector, shielding us from the sun for a day of fun. But sunscreen isn’t as simple as we once thought it was!

The same lotions and creams that we use to protect ourselves frequently include chemical filters that can harm our skin or even advance signs of aging.

Here’s a question we likely know the answer to: would you drink your chemical sunscreen? Of course not! But look more closely at how chemical sunscreens work and you’ll see just how invasive the protective process can actually be.

Chemical sunscreens contain a cocktail of active ingredients such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate, which are absorbed by your skin. Once these chemical filters are deeply absorbed, they cause a chemical reaction to dissipate harmful UV rays and prevent them from penetrating your skin.

Studies show that while this process is effective in protecting your skin from UV rays, trace amounts of some of these chemicals can also make their way into the bloodstream, and into the breastmilk of nursing infants. An increasing body of research also cites changes in bodily hormone levels and increased risk of other conditions like endometriosis. There’s a lot that’s yet unknown about chemical sunscreens, but the research surfacing suggests a potential iceberg underneath the surface.

Enter mineral sunscreens. What makes them a better choice?

Unlike their chemical cousins, mineral sunscreens use natural active ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to create a protective barrier from the sun. Rather than soaking in these ingredients, your skin is protected from UVA/UVB rays by a physical barrier that reflects rays away from the skin.

We love how versatile modern mineral sunscreens can be.

Gone are the days of a white chalky layer on the skin. Brands like Colorescience® offer mineral-based sun protection that’s easy to layer or brush on, with clean ingredients and backed by research we trust. All of their products use only 100% pure, natural antioxidants, minerals, and botanicals. But they’re also formulated with potent, clinically-tested and effective ingredients.
